Epson EMP TW1000 projector

The only way to truly appreciate High Definition is with a big screen, and by big we don't mean 40, 50 or even 60 inches. No, we mean big in a real cinema kind of way, and the only way to achieve this is with a video projector, perhaps one like the Epson EMP TW1000.

The EMP TW1000 is an HD model that uses what Epson calls Crystal Clear Fine (C2Fine) LCD panels, and each panel there are three, one each for red, green, and blue - has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Apart from being an HD projector, the EMP TW1000 is claimed to deliver a contrast ratio of 12 000 to one, uses 10-bit processing and is equipped with an HDMI version 1.3 compatible port.

All these features would mean nothing if the projector was difficult to set up and use. Fortunately, a long zoom and vertical and horizontal lens shift made meant that we needed no more than a few minutes to get an image centred and focussed on a two-metre-wide screen.

With six pre-set modes, which include Natural, Theatre, Theatre Black 1 and Theatre Black 2, anyone should be able to find a brightness/colour setting that they like. We found that Theatre Black 1 worked extremely well, and in this mode we saw deep black levels - as good as we've seen from an LCD projector - and colour depth and quality that was smooth and grain-free. Add to this near flawless image movement and you start to appreciate just how good movie watching at home can be.

We were also glad to note that the internal image scaling in the projector worked well, and this meant that standard definition DVDs also looked good on screen, although they obviously couldn't quite match HD material as far as image sharpness and detail were concerned.

The only slight downside to the projector was that, in all modes barring Theatre Black 2 where the on-screen image was a little too dark for our liking, fan noise was a little intrusive.

But that's a small complaint. Overall, we certainly enjoyed the capabilities of the Epson EMP TW1000.
